Namibia
Namibia’s mineral localities reflect a dramatic geological history: ancient Precambrian basement, the Damara Orogen’s folded metamorphic belts, vast desert basins, and world-class granites and pegmatites. The Erongo–Spitzkoppe region is celebrated for granitic and pegmatitic pockets producing superb quartz (including smoky and sceptre forms), feldspar, fluorite, topaz, beryl (aquamarine), tourmaline, garnet, and rare phosphates. Farther south, the Tsumeb area is one of the great polymetallic classics, famed for an extraordinary suite of copper, lead, and zinc minerals – represented by brilliant azurite, malachite, cuprite, cerussite, and many rarities – alongside fine sulphides. Namibia also yields striking dioptase from copper deposits and attractive calcite and baryte from several districts.
Collecting Namibian minerals is rewarding because the country combines gemmy pegmatite species with legendary ore-locality rarities, often in exceptionally sharp, colourful crystals. Localities are iconic and well documented, so a Namibia-focused collection can be both visually spectacular and scientifically rich.
